A 53-year-old Surrey man was killed Friday night in a single-vehicle car crash on Highway 1 near Spuzzum, B.C.

Police said the driver was heading west at about 8 p.m. when his vehicle failed to negotiate a right-hand curve, entered a ditch and flipped end over end several times before coming to rest on its roof in the middle of the highway.

"The driver suffered heavy internal injuries in the crash," RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said.

The driver was taken to Fraser Canyon Hospital for treatment, but "extensive efforts" to revive him failed, Thiessen said.

"Speed is believed to be a major factor with respect to this crash," he said. "Alcohol and drugs appear not to be a factor."

The name of the deceased was not released.
