Target could be eying Chilliwack

It’s not clear if the Chilliwack Zellers is destined to become a Target store or not.

After media inquiries about the local department store started arriving at city hall last week, city officials contacted Target reps requesting any details they could release about their plans.

“Unfortunately, it’s not yet clear which current Zellers locations will eventually become Target stores,” said Target rep Matt Zabel in an emailed reply.

Target is buying the leasehold rights of up to 220 of the 272 or so Zellers locations across Canada.

“Of those 220 current Zellers locations that Target will acquire (we don’t know which ones yet), Target expects to open approximately 100 to 150 new Target stores.”

It is “just too early in the process” to know yet which locations will end up transformed into a Target store, another retailer, or continue under the Zellers banner, he said.

Target Corp. signed a $1.8 billion deal on Jan. 13 to buy Zellers Inc. from Hudson’s Bay Company, and the first Target stores in Canada will open in 2013.
