TRAFFIC: Crash slows traffic on Hwy 1 near Rosedale

Traffic backing up in Popkum area

Witnesses in the Herrling Island area of Highway 1 near Popkum-Rosedale report a single-vehicle crash has slowed traffic significantly along the westbound lane.

It appears a truck with a trailer crashed into the barrier on the side of the road. The trailer has overturned but the truck is upright. Witnesses said the driver has exited the vehicle and appears to be uninjured. Emergency crews are on the scene. Traffic is travelling in the right lane only.

The crash site is north of the Popkum Motor Park near the southern tip of Herrling Island. Westbound traffic starts to slow down near the Herrling Island Road exit and is backed up to F.H. Barber Provincial Park south of Laidlaw. Traffic is also slowing down on eastbound Highway 1 for a small stretch just outside of Popkum.

The "S-curve" in the Herrling Island area has a tendency to be a frequent crash site; witnesses say the road was slicker than usual due to the recent rainfall.

Traffic along the southbound side of the Agassiz-Rosedale Bridge is a bit heavier than usual, possibly as a result of detouring commuters that would normally be on Highway 1.

More to come
