No animals were killed or injured when a fire ripped through a chicken barn in Chilliwack on Wednesday.

Chilliwack fire crews battled the fire at the north end of on Carey Road in a rural area of the city near the Fraser River. Crews from halls 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 were dispatched just before noon, and a second alarm was issued shortly after noon on April 13.

When the first crew arrived there was a report of a double decker chicken barn half involved with heavy smoke and flame visible.

“Crews quickly established a water supply and knocked the fire down, preventing the fire from spreading to an adjacent vacant barn. The barn was completely destroyed,” said assistant fire chief Mike Bourdon.

“Fortunately, there were no animals or products in the barn.”

An excavator was brought in to assist fire crews with the overhaul and extinguishment.

There were no firefighter injuries.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental and is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department.
