VIDEO: One dead after early morning crash east of Mission

Black pickup truck crashed into tree on Lougheed Highway; passenger declared dead on scene

One person is dead after a pickup truck crashed into a tree along the 39100 block of Lougheed Highway, east of Mission, on March 22.

The black pickup was heading westbound at around 7:30 a.m. when it slammed into a tree near the intersection with Waring Road, midway between Deroche and Dewdney.

When Mission RCMP arrived, there were already two ambulances, along with ALS (Advanced Life Support) and two fire trucks on scene.

After speaking to emergency crews, it was determined that the truck, which had two male occupants, veered off the roadway and hit a tree.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to an RCMP spokesperson, “information and evidence obtained at scene, indicated the black pickup truck attempted to pass a farm tractor in the left lane and lost control of the truck as the tractor began to make a left hand turn into a property. The truck skidded off the roadway and collided with an adjacent tree, causing significant damage to the front and passenger areas.”

The driver was able to exit the truck under his own power, sustaining non-life threatening injuries. He then rendered assistance to his passenger, but unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries at scene.

Both the driver and witnesses are cooperating with police and drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.

The BC Highway Patrol, based in Chilliwack, attended the scene and are now the primary investigators of the collision and will be looking to determine if speed and weather played a part in the collision.

The driver was ultimately transported to the Abbotsford Hospital for further medical care. No names are being released at this time.

RCMP Highway Patrol, along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) were on scene for several hours investigating the incident.
