Ben passed away on March 31, 2010, in Hope, BC. He is predeceased by his wife Valija, stepson Laimons Kanders, brothers Albert, Reinhold

and Alfred ‘Fred’, sisters Mildred, Elsie and Albertina ‘Dot’, his half brothers Herman, Walter, Edward and Otto, nephew Raymond, andniece Bernice. Ben is survived by his daughter-in-law Frieda Kanders, half brother Danny (Thelma), half sisters Lydia (Harry), Edith and Martha, grandchildren Solveiga, Diane (John) and Anita (Jim), several great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. Ben was born on July 26, 1920 in Stanley, Manitoba. He grew up in Snowflake, Manitoba working on the family farm. When he was ready to venture out to build his own life Ben headed west, landed in BC, and never looked back. It was in Hope that Ben met and married his wife of over 40 years. Ben spent several years working at the Giant Nickel Mine, as well as working as an auto mechanic, and eventually he and his wife started a hobby farm in Flood, BC. He was well known in the community for his top quality fruits and vegetables. Ben was an active member of the International Order of Foresters for many years. A funeral service will be held for Ben on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at

1:00 p.m. at Mountainside Funeral Home 1270 Ryder Street Hope, BC. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the

Canadian Diabetes Association. The family would like to thank the amazing staff and volunteers at the Fraser Hope Lodge and the Fraser Canyon Hospital for their excellent care and support. The family would also like to acknowledge the very close friends Ben made at the Fraser Hope Lodge, including his table-mates: Walter, Ernie & Allan. You were all his family when we were not there.
