October 4, 1937 - November 24, 2024

Daisy Sachiyo Araki (Akune) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Fraser Hope Lodge on November 24, 2024. Mom was born in Steveston, BC on October 4, 1937. She married Merv Araki in 1963, and settled into their life in Hope raising a family and later, spoiling their two granddaughters. Mom was an avid reader, curious and eager to learn her entire life. She returned to school and became one of the first Education Assistants in the Hope school district.

After retirement, Mom and Dad embraced the opportunity to travel to Hawaii, the Caribbean, and across Canada to visit with family. Mom welcomed people into her kitchen like it was their home. She was kind and generous, and an amazing cook, always remembering what people liked so she could have it ready for their next visit. Mom loved trying new cuisine, tweaking family favourites and managing her extensive recipe library. She faced her battle with Parkinson's disease with inspirational courage and dignity. We are grateful that she and Dad are together now, tending their garden. She is survived by daughters Maya (Doug) and Marci; granddaughters Betsie and Elizabeth; siblings Roy (Itoko) Akune, Robert (Molly) Akune, Misaye Hamaura, Ted (Rose) Akune; sister-in-law Yukiko Tanaka; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the care and support provided to Mom by Dr. Rosanna Switzer, Dr. Martin McKeown, Sylta Hellner and the staff at the Fraser Hope Lodge and Sharon Barber. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 14th at 11:00 a.m., at the Steveston Buddhist Temple in Richmond, B.C. In lieu of flowers or koden, please consider a donation in Mom's name to the Parkinson's Society of British Columbia.
