A strong opening weekend for Chilliwack Chiefs netminder Mathieu Caron earned him honourable mention status as the BCHL announced its first Player of the Week for the 2021 pod season.

Victoria’s Ellis Rickwood got the nod after scoring five goals in two games.

Caron was a close contender after backstopping Chilliwack to victories over Merritt and Prince George.

The 20-year-old stopper turned aside 22 of 24 pucks last Friday in a 5-2 win over the Centennials, and one day later stopped 25 of 26 shots in a 4-1 win over the Spruce Kings. He was named first star in that game.

All told, the Abbotsford product comes out of the weekend with a 1.50 goals-against average and 94.0 save percentage.

Caron and crew are back in action Thursday (5 p.m.), facing Merritt at the Chilliwack Coliseum.
