In their final home game of the 2021 BC Football Conference season, the Valley Huskers (2-3) came up two points short against the Vancouver Island Raiders (2-2).
The Raiders escaped with a 21-19 victory Oct. 2 at Chilliwack’s Exhibition Stadium, holding off a late rally from the home team.
The Huskers trailed 21-10 heading into the fourth quarter. With five-and-a-half minutes to play, the offence drove the ball down the one-yard line and celebrated as running back Brandon O’Connor rumbled in for the touchdown. Quarterback Josh Janssen connected with receiver Dylan Manocha on the two-point convert to get Chilliwack within three.
With 1:53 remaining, the offence got close enough to try a field goal from about 30 yards out, but kicker Ethan Homan was wide left.
The single point wrapped up the scoring.
Homan made one field goal earlier in the game from 29 yards out and the other Husker score came on the defensive side, with Jordan Chizda returning an interception 60 yards for a major.
James Moar had a nice day with five tackles and two quarterback sacks.
The Huskers finish the season with away games at Langley (Oct. 9), at Kamloops (Oct. 16) and at Vancouver Island (Oct. 30).
