NHL bloodlines on Penticton Vees roster

Chilliwack Chiefs host Penticton Vees on Saturday

The best team in the BCHL visits Chilliwack this weekend, bringing several familiar surnames into a game with the hometown Chiefs.

The Penticton Vees are loaded with talent, including several sons of former National Hockey Leaguers.

Weight. Niedermayer. Sillinger. Barnes. Amonte.

Any fan of late 1990s/early 2000s NHL hockey will recognize those names.

Vees forward Danny Weight is the offspring of Doug Weight, who played for the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders.

Weight collected 301 goals and 1,105 points in 1,335 career games and earned a Stanley Cup ring with the 2006 Hurricanes.

Jackson Niedermayer is the son of Hall of Fame defenceman Scott Niedermayer, a four time Stanley Cup champ and 2003-04 Norris Trophy winner who played for the New Jersey Devils and Anaheim Ducks.

Known as one of the smoothest skating D-men of all-time, Niedermayer produced 197 goals and 838 points in 1,465 career regular season and playoff games. He also racked up the hardware internationally. Niedermayer captured World Junior gold with Canada in 1991, helped his country win gold at two Winter Olympics, along with first place finishes at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2004 IIHF World Championships.

Tristan Amonte’s dad, Tony Amonte, enjoyed a productive career with the New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks, Phoenix Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers and Calgary Flames.

He currently ranks No. 11 all-time among U-S born skaters with 900 regular season points and helped the United States win gold at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey.

Lukas Sillinger’s dad, Mike Sillinger, has the distinction of being a record-breaking NHL nomad.

During his 17 season career he played for 12 different teams and was traded nine times.

Sillinger’s journey included stops with the Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and New York Islanders.

The gritty grinder collected 251 goals and 566 points in 1,092 career games.

The Vees and Chiefs square off Saturday night with a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Chilliwack Coliseum.
