Season ends in Spokane

The Chilliwack Bruins may have played their last game as a Western Hockey league franchise Saturday night, losing 6-4 to Spokane in game five of their first round playoff series.

With the prospect of a sale and relocation to Victoria hanging over their heads, the Bruins hit the ice at Spokane’s Veterans Memorial Coliseum trying to avoid elimination.

The Chiefs stepped on their throats early, taking a 3-1 lead through 20 minutes. Mitch Holmberg opened the scoring 4:58 in, and Blake Gal added a pair late in the first period.

Kevin Sundher got the Bruins goal on a power play, with assists to Brandon Magee and Jamie Crooks.

The Chiefs upped the energy in period two, out-shooting Chilliwack 20-7. Holmberg scored his second of the game for the home team, but Robin Soudek and Dylen McKinlay replied for Chilliwack to make it a one-goal game heading to period three.

McKinlay’s second of the game 11:14 into the final frame briefly tied the game at 4-4, but Gal restored the lead at 13:05 and Levko Koper added an empty netter to end Chilliwack’s season.
