Salmon are currently making their way upstream to lay their eggs in rivers all over the province.
In Hope, that means viewing of this annual phenomenon is right now, at Thacker Regional Park. Countless salmon are pushing their way up the stream, splashing, diving and retreating to the cool pools of water for breaks. There are plenty of spots to safely view the salmon without disturbing them, at the trail that connects to the Kettle Valley Railway.
A man-made spawning channel was added to the area in 1988 and improved in 2006. The hike around the channel is an easy 1 km walk and suitable for people of all ages. For those looking for a longer walk, carry on past the KVR marker through to the Othello Tunnels.
To access Thacker Regional Park, there is a small parking lot at 20840 Union Bar Rd., off Kawkawa Lake Road by the Coquihalla River bridge.
