You may have noticed flags on Fraser-Cascade School District 78 property at half-staff.

In a letter to community members, school district officials said the flags will remain down Sept. 27 to 30 in observance of the inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

“We acknowledge that the week may be hard for many members of our Indigenous communities as it occurs only a few months after the findings of the 215 lost children in the Kamloops Residential School and the subsequent findings throughout Canada,” the letter reads. “Our counsellors and Indigenous support workers will be there to support our students.”

Fraser-Cascade operats on the land of 13 First Nations communities, not including off-reserve students.

Throughout the week leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, students will engage in reconciliation activities throughout the week and will have their district Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, Sept. 29.

“We also encourage our entire community to wear orange on September 30 and to participate in the many reconciliation activities in your area,” the letter continues.

There is no school on Thursday, Sept. 30.
