Robin Beukens is the new director of community development for the District of Hope.

“We have an incredible opportunity to shape a future that embodies the aspirations and dreams of the people of Hope,” Beukens said in a press release. “I am honoured and excited to embark on this journey alongside the community, working collaboratively to build a Hope that thrives for generations to come.”

Beukens, who takes over from former acting director Richard Zerr, was officially introduced by the district during Monday night’s (Dec. 11) council meeting. Previously working for the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD), Beukens spent his professional career working in both community development and policy planning. His background includes working as a Watershed Planner, Senior Planner, Planner II, as well as working with various “municipal, regional, and provincial governmental spheres.”

He obtained a Masters of City Planning from the University of Manitoba and is a registered professional planner and member of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

According to the district, Beukens “affinity for small-town charm, natural landscapes, and celebrating diversity aligns seamlessly with the ethos of the District of Hope. His vision centers on tackling crucial issues such as housing affordability, fostering community growth, and engaging residents actively in shaping their future.”

Now that he’s working for the district, Beukens said he’s looking forward to hearing from the community and getting their thoughts on what Hope’s future should look like.

“We’re going to look out for the community’s (best interests),” he said. “We’re going to do our best and work towards making Hope work for the good of the community. And protecting the public’s interest is going to be a key part of that.”

Born, raised, and currently living in Chilliwack, Beukens said he spent a good portion of his childhood in Hope visiting his family members. He is married and has two daughters.

When not working, Beukens said he enjoys hiking, camping, basketball, board games, and gardening.
