The District of Hope will fly the Pride flag this June, in honour of Pride Month.

The decision was made by council in an impromptu regular meeting on Monday night (Jan. 22), and was announced on the district’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

The post was titled Unlocking Unity: District of Hope Paves the Way for Inclusivity, and asked residents to comment if they are “ready to support and uplift one another.”

This newest decision is a reversal of one made in 2023 regarding flag policies. The Hope Pride Committee had asked council to have a Pride flag flown during Pride Month last March, but it was voted against for various reasons.

The committee told the Standard at the time that they were disappointed with that decision. But in May 2023, they were thrilled with with a council decision to instead display a Pride banner on the building. That was seen as an historic move for the community.

Once again, the community is largely supporting the District of Hope in this decision. People were quick to comment positively on the Facebook post to thank the district and give kudos.

Hope Pride posted their response on Facebook, as well.

“We are incredibly excited to share that the Pride flag will fly at the District of Hope in honour of Pride month this year,” they wrote. “Thank you to everyone who supported this process and journey. Thank you to the district staff who have supported us. And thank you district council for your vote to make this happen.”
