Children’s Day is only a few days away for the people of Japan who traditionally acknowledge the holiday on May 5.

In honour of the day, the Sunshine Valley Tashme Museum will celebrate with a performance of traditional Japanese taiko by GO Taiko.

Taking place on May 4 at 2 p.m., visitors will be able to enjoy traditonal Japanese drumming at the Tashme museum. The event is free to everyone and features GO Taiko, a taiko group from East Vancouver and Richmond.

Started over 11 years old, the group is the second youth taiko group in the area. Taiko, outside of Japan, is used to describe any of the various Japanese drums, or precussion instruments. These instruments range in size and are typically used in traditional Japanese folk and classical songs.

The group will help Tashme acknowledge the final celebration of Golden Week, a holiday period in Japan that takes place from April 29 to May 5. It is considered one of the largest holiday periods of the year for Japan, and also includes Shõwa Day, Constitution Memorial Day, and Greenery Day.

Children’s Day, which was deemed a national holiday by the Japanese government in 1948, is a day that celebrates the happiness and personalities of children. Originally just a holiday for boys the day was expanded to also celebrate girls in 1948.
