One person is dead following Monday night’s chain reaction semi-truck crash on the Coquihalla.

Hope RCMP responded to the southbound lanes of Highway 5 near the Great Bear Snow Shed at about 5:50, Jan. 15.

According to Sgt. Mike Sargent a transport truck was struck from the rear by a second transport truck. A third transport truck slammed into the rear of the other two transport trucks after being unable to stop.

The driver of the third transport truck died at the scene.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who tragically passed away as a result of this incident,” says Sgt. Sargent.

The Hope RCMP are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the RCMP Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS) and the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety & Enforcement (CVSE) unit.

The Coquihalla was closed southbound for several hours and reopened Tuesday morning.
