As people get ready for Indigenous Peoples Day on Wednesday (June 21), Chawathil First Nation is taking the extra step of inviting the public to celebrate the day with them at the Telte Yet Camp Site.
It’s both National Indigenous History Month and Indigenous People’s Day and Chawathil is welcoming everyone to the campsite, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for a day full of storytelling, games, live entertainment, and a provided barbeque. Organized by Lucy Gouwenberg and the Chawathil council, people will have the opportunity to peruse tables with activities and teachings that include arts and crafts, language learning, storytelling, traditional medicine, and cultural brushing. In addition, Chawathil Elder Pat John will be providing a storytelling session at 11 a.m., and the Pil’alt Warrior Group will be performing at 10:30 a.m.
All are welcomed and the public is asked to bring their own lawn chairs.
