Chilliwack’s Promontory Road impassable after water main bursts

The failure caused a section of road to cave in, leaving residents with only one way off the hill

Promontory Road has been blocked off Monday morning (April 18) and a section of the road has caved in after a water main burst.

The failure happened in the early hours of the day about halfway up the hill near Uplands Road. A river of water flowed down the hill, forming a lake at the bottom, between Chester Drive and Chilliwack River Road. By 9:30 a.m. that water had started to recede, but significant damage was done to the road above.

The road is badly damaged where the water main burst, leaving it totally impassable for anyone trying to get up or down the hill.

With schools closed for Easter Monday, traffic heading down the hill on Promontory Road was significantly reduced. Had the water main burst on a busier day, it would have caused chaos.

As it is, Prest is currently the one option for motorists trying to get to or from Promontory.

Residents in the immediate area have also been left without water.

More details to come.
