Firefighters were busy battling a mill fire in Delta on Sunday morning (April 7).
Fire crews were on site at the business – located in the 9300-block of Alaska Way near Surrey Fraser Docks – shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, and fought the stubborn blaze for several hours.
“When crews arrived, there was a substantial-sized pile of lumber on fire underneath an overhang,” Delta deputy fire chief Dave Ayton confirmed Sunday afternoon.
“There’s still two apparatus on scene hitting hot spots,” he added, shortly before 4 p.m.
A backhoe was brought in to tear the lumber apart, in order to fully extinguish the flames.

Surrey firefighters also assisted with the labour-intensive fire, which caused heavy smoke in the area as crews worked to knock it down.
The fact there was so much fuel involved, as well as the fire’s location, and getting equipment on site, were all reasons the blaze took hours to put out, he said, giving fire crews credit for a job well done.
No one was working at the mill at the time and there were no injuries. The mill, while still standing, will require some repair.
There’s no information as to cause at this time, Ayton said, with the investigation expected to start Monday (April 8).
