After a short hiatus last year, Flight Fest is making its return to the Chilliwack airport.

Started more than 25 years ago, the Chilliwack Air Show—or Flight Fest as it’s also known—was created as a way to allow the community at large to explore the airport and learn about its value.

“The flying club and the city got together and wanted to have an open house so the general public could learn the value of the (airport),” explained Ray Firkus, who’s been involved with the event since its conception.

“And it went on for 25 years, (but) last year we didn’t have a show for various reasons,” continued Firkus. But despite all challenges, the show’s back on this year and maintaining its free admission.

“It’s a scaled-down event (this year) but there’s still going to be lots of stuff on the ramp,” Firkus added.

Held at the Chilliwack Airport on Saturday, Aug. 25, the Firkus says this year’s event boasts “more stuff to do and see out on the apron than what we’ve had in previous years” even though it’s smaller. “But it’s a stepping stone to get back to where we were.”

And although the gates to Flight Fest don’t open until 4 p.m., and Firkus says there will still be lots to do and see.

“We have like 30 different people and vendors coming,” he said during a telephone interview. “There will also be some flying and videos on a jumbo-tron, an RCMP display, and the military (may) be bringing five aircraft—although that will be confirmed last minute.”

Then, after the gates close, the fun really gets started with a ticketed hangar dance that rocks to the music of The Vacationers. Tickets are $5 in advance, or $10 at the door, and can be purchased at Firkus Aircraft Inc., located at 46206 Airport Rd.

“Our goal this year is to not disappoint people … but we hope to over-deliver (anyways).”
