The George Massey Tunnel will closed for four consecutive nights beginning this Thursday.

Highway 99 will be closed in both directions April 4-7 as crews work to complete upgrades to the tunnel’s counterflow system.

Full closures of the George Massey Tunnel will take place on Thursday, April 4 and Friday, April 5 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. northbound and 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. southbound, and on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. northbound and 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. southbound.

During these full overnight closure, drivers travelling between Delta and Richmond can detour east to the Alex Fraser Bridge. Emergency vehicles and late-night buses will still be able to use the tunnel with an escort vehicle.

The upgraded electronic lane-control system will be back in operation in time for the morning commute on Monday, April 8. Temporary lane-control pickets currently in place to maintain motorist safety will be removed once electronic counterflow operations are restored.

“The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure appreciates peoples’ patience while this important system upgrade is made to ensure the continued safety of those commuting through the George Massey Tunnel,” the ministry said in a press release.

While the tunnel’s counterflow system is being upgraded, drivers are asked to use caution, obey the posted speed limit, watch for traffic-control personnel and check for updates.
