Police are investigating a drive-by shooting in Newton early Monday morning after someone in a dark SUV unloaded a machine gun at a jewelry store in the Payal Business Centre.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Tammy Lobb said police responded at 2:52 a.m. to a “glass-break” alarm at a business in the area of 80 Avenue and 128 Street. “When officers arrived on scene, they located evidence consistent with a shooting. The business was closed at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.

“Initial information indicates that this was a targeted incident. Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit has conduct of this investigation and are working to determine the motive,” she said. Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

According to the Surrey RCMP, “there are no indications at this time that it is linked to the extortion series.”

Recently some South Asian businesses in Surrey, Vancouver and Abbotsford received letters or phone calls from “Indian gang members” demanding money under threat of violence.
