Truck fire shuts down Highway 5

Police said Sunday's blaze was a result of a mechanical failure

A truck trailer fire shut down the Coquihalla Highway in both directions on Sunday.

The Coquihalla Highway was shut down in both directions on Sunday after a truck trailer burst into flames in the southbound lanes near Carolin Mine Road.

The unit was carrying highly flammable materials and was fully engulfed when RCMP arrived on scene at about 11 p.m.

The hazardous cargo prompted an 800-metre safety radius, closing traffic in both directions for several hours. The Department of Highways assisted the RCMP with establishing barriers.

Northbound traffic was turned around, and southbound traffic was diverted into the northbound lanes.

Police said the fire started in the truck cab as a result of a mechanical failure and spread to the trailer. There were no injuries.
