Our beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend passed away at home with family in the early hours of Saturday June 10th.
Muriel was born in Didsbury, Alberta to Leslie and Matilda 'Tillie' Oliver, followed by her twin sisters Joanne (Munro) and Dianne (Lunt). In 1944 Muriel's family moved to a farm in Rosedale, B.C. where she and her sisters grew up.
She attended school in Rosedale and Chilliwack, eventually obtaining her 'Grade 13' from Chilliwack Senior Secondary School. In her early teenage years Muriel worked at Hank Oliver's Restaurant (no relation) and was often mistaken for the owner's daughter due to her young age and work ethic.
Later she spent her summers working at Manning Park Resort and Halcyon Hot Springs in Nakusp, B.C.
In 1956 Muriel married the love of her life, John Young, and moved to Hope, B.C. They built their life and family by welcoming four children: Marlene (Adriaan), Steven, Julie (Barry) and Karen.
Given her work history, it likely came as no surprise that she continued her life in the hospitality industry. She spent time working at a local restaurant, Ryan's, while the kids were very young. It wasn't long before she and John were venturing into their own businesses.
At one point in time Muriel oversaw the operation and management of four separate restaurants in Hope and the surrounding areas: Brownies (Baron's Fried Chicken), Smitty's Pancake House (Silver Creek Pancake House), Digger's Gold Nugget Restaurant and, of course, Rolly's Restaurant.
Muriel lived a life of service. More often than not it was shown in simple moments: offering someone a ride, a conversation, a meal or even a room in her own home. Whatever she could do to help, she did it. She was a large part of the Christian community and a member at the Hope Pentecostal Church. She was an absolute force!
Always thanking God for giving her the strength to do whatever was needed while not holding back when she felt a person needed correction.
Muriel was predeceased by parents Leslie and Matilda, husband John and daughters Marlene, Julie and Karen.
Muriel is survived by sisters Joanne and Dianne, son Steven, grandchildren Esther, Brittany, Christopher, Katlyn and Steven 'Stevie', as well as her great-grandchildren Brook, Julie and Oliver.
She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, all of whom only she could have explained how many times removed they were.
Muriel also leaves a large number of dear friends and current and former staff members who know the love she felt for them and their importance in her life.
A private service will be held on June 23, 2023.
