A woman goes missing without a trace. An Indigenous woman, young, vulnerable and very much loved by her mother, many aunties and other family members. How many times have we heard this story across Canada?
But this time, it’s different for many in the community. Shawnee Morita Inyallie is a local woman, someone many have met and talked with and someone we knew of, if we didn’t know her personally.
One month later, and a lot of information is missing from the time when Shawnee was last seen. Where was she last seen and when? What was she wearing that day?
While frustration mounts, the family is not giving up hope. After a highway search from Agassiz to Hope earlier this month, they are planning a search of the Fraser River and the banks along the river Sept. 16. The search will start in Hope and head all the way to Mission.

Sometimes it feels like we in the media are writing the same information over and over again, simply because this information is crucial. The RCMP have told me a shred of information, which the bearer of might see as insignificant, could be the information that leads to finding Shawnee.

As Mike Rail, spokesperson with the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP, said: “Somebody knows where Shawnee is, and that somebody, that person — call us.”
