The Abbotsford Canucks power play finally provided some offence, but it wasn’t enough in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bakersfield Condors on Friday (Jan. 26).

Prior to Friday, the Canucks had scored one power play goal in January.

They managed to score with the man advantage twice against the Condors on Friday, as Chase Wouters tied the game up at 1:39 of the second on the power play. Vasily Podkolzin added to the power play bonanza about three and a half minutes later and Abbotsford was up 2-1.

That lead lasted just 46 seconds as former Abbotsford and Vancouver Canucks forward Lane Pederson tied the game back up. He scored two on the night.

The Condors grabbed the lead back when Raphael Lavoie scored at 9:04, but Canucks defenceman Filip Johansson tied the game back up at 17:02 of the second. Unfortunately, Johansson was hit hard into the boards in the third period and did not return.

Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs and Condors goalie Jack Campbell shut the door in the third and overtime saw Abbotsford’s Matt Irwin get called for interference in the extra frame. Lavoie scored the game winner at 2:59 of overtime to give Bakersfield the win.

Both teams finished with 31 shots and Podkolzin led the Canucks with five shots on goal. Podkolzin was the lone Canuck to have a two-point night. He now has 11 goals and 22 points in 32 games this season.

The game was also delayed for close to 20 minutes when a pane of glass had to be replaced after the first period.

Abbotsford’s record falls to 21-13-3-2 and they are an ordinary 4-4-1-1 in their past 10 games. The Canucks sit in fifth place in the Pacific Division.

The power play now moves to 7.3 per cent on the month and has gone three for 41 in January.

The two teams meet again on Saturday (Jan. 27) in Bakersfield and it will be an AHL TV free view game. All games on the league’s streaming network will be free that day and users only have to log in to access the game. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.

Abbotsford’s next home game is set for Feb. 2, when the San Jose Barracuda come to the Abbotsford Centre.
