How about the peace and quiet of the outdoors? Then the Dark Sky Highway is definitely for you!

BC Highway 3, known as the Crowsnest Highway, has also been known as the Dark Sky Highway for many years. With no major cities along this route, nighttime light pollution is limited. It’s the perfect Canadian road trip, including everything from the Rockies to hot springs to resort towns. In the evening, you’ll notice the vast dark sky along the entire highway. And during the day, it’s full of fun and adventure!

The portion of Highway 3 within the Hope, Cascades & Canyons Region runs from Hope to East Gate (approximately 85 km), a small cabin community on the eastern side of E.C. Manning Provincial Park. In between, you’ll find the massive protected area of Manning Provincial Park, the small community of Sunshine Valley just outside of the West Gate of the park, and the popular roadside viewpoint at the Hope Slide. All areas offer year-round outdoor recreational opportunities, and of course the incredible night skies.

The Dark Sky in Manning Park offers some of the best stargazing around. With multiple viewing locations and limited light pollution, the views are incredible. Recommended viewing locations include the Lightning Lake Day use (year-round), Cascade Lookout (in the summer), or even in Windy Joe’s Field near the resort. Look for Dark Sky events scheduled throughout the year, such as Guided Snowshoe Tours and Moonlight Nordic Ski Downs. Astronomy weekends in 2020 take place Oct. 16 to 18.
